1st Annual Dairy Goat Field Day

Presented By Emerald Dairy Goat Association

Our speakers covered everything from Livestock Guardian Dogs presented by Meg Hicks to Cheesemaking presented by Cathy Fulbright. They continued with Herbal Nutrition presented by Katherine Drovdahl and Dairy Goat conformation presented by Melanie Fergason. For those looking into just beginning goat ownership, Laura Lounsbury introduced the Dairy Goat 101 Basics class. And, Sherry Reyna was available to answer any questions from her 40 years experience with goats. 4-H provided breakfast and lunch. The finale was the distribution of over 40 goat related raffle items to winning participants.

Katherine Drovdahl, Author of “The Accessible Pet, Equine and Livestock Herbal,” an authoritative herbal compendium from a skilled healer, came with her well-stocked tables of herbal aides and supplements for health and wellness of all animals. The Haystack Feeds table was presided over by Amber McKinney. Shirley Gardner, teacher of our monthly classes, sold our oatmeal/vanilla goat’s milk soap made especially for the occasion.

Getting up close and personal with goats was a major part of the conformation class led by Melanie Fergason. If you want to see how addictive goats can be, just spend a little time with them. Melanie demonstrated the straight backs and impressive udder development of goats in her herd consisting of Alpines, La Manchas, Toggenbergs and Nubians.

Now we have begun preparations for 2018's bigger and better field day. We can't wait!
